Lawrence A. Baratta

Mr. Baratta has been practicing law for 10+ years in various fields, including intellectual property (patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets) and complex business litigation. Prior to the practice of law, Mr. Baratta worked at Nortel Networks for 10 years in various engineering and technical sales functions related to fiber optics and data networking. Mr. Baratta has also spent time at venture-funded start-ups including Qtera (acquired by Nortel Networks in 2000) and AirDefense (acquired by Motorola Solutions in 2008).

Mr. Baratta focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution in various technology areas such as optics, semiconductors, wireless, data networking, software/business methods, mechanical, and medical devices. Mr. Baratta also counsels clients with respect to trademarks, copyrights, licensing, contracts, and opinions.

Mr. Baratta has been involved in numerous large contract negotiations for purchases including negotiating and closing a billion-dollar purchase commitment with WorldCom in 1998 and a $300M purchase commitment with Broadwing in 1999. 

Having spent time at acquired start-ups, Mr. Baratta was involved in the $3.25B acquisition of Qtera by Nortel in 2000 and IP due diligence related to the Motorola acquisition of AirDefense. Mr. Baratta represents numerous large companies, venture-funded start-ups, and government agencies, and recently had a Silicon Valley-based client achieve a billion-dollar market capitalization from founding in five years. 

Mr. Baratta also represents business clients in litigation matters before both State and Federal Courts.
